The Empire District Electric Company engages in the generation, purchase,
transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity to residential, commercial, and
industrial customers in parts of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. It
provides water service to three towns in Missouri. The company, through its
subsidiary, The Empire District Gas Company, also provides natural gas distribution
to communities in northwest, north central, and west central Missouri. As of December
31, 2006, its gas utility properties consisted of approximately 87 miles of transmission
mains and approximately 1,105 miles of distribution mains. The company also leases
fiber optics cable and equipment, as well as distributes automated meter reading
equipment. As of the above date, it owned generating facilities with a capacity of
1,100 megawatts. The Empire District Electric Company was founded in 1909 and is
headquartered in Joplin, Missouri.
